One of the characteristics of the last century is a search and valorization of national identities and culturally defined expressions. In these works inspiration stemmed either from one’s own cultural identity or from a fascination with an acquired one.  National folklore and cultural styles are here either directly quoted or recalled to inspire new imagination to one’s creation.

In early Renaissance Italy, a new style of improvised theater originated in the streets and squares. The Commedia dell’Arte characters, comical and strongly defined, became a fundamental influence in every realm of art. Painters, writers, musicians, and actors for centuries took inspiration from these theatrical characters, developing figures such as Pierrot and Harlequin into beloved and everlasting personalities.

ANNIVERSARIES AND INFLUENCES

Johannes Brahms, Sonatensatz in C minor, vn, pf
Igor Stravinsky, A Soldier’s Tale, vn, cl, pf

Inspired by Chopin’s and Schumann’s 200 years’ anniversary, this program also dips into music by their good friend Brahms. Chatman’s asymmetrical runs and fractal patters were obviously inspired by Bartok’s Contrasts.

Witold Lutosławski, Dance Preludes cl, pf
Norbert Palej, Burlesque, vn, cl, pf

Pablo de Sarasate, Carmen Fantasy, vn, pf
Igor Stavinsky, A Soldier’s Tale, vn, cl, pf

This program follows the adventures of two soldiers, Stravinsky’s old Russian folk tale, and Milhaud’s real French story, as one loses his music and his soul to the Devil, while the other has music bringing back his lost memories. The devil reappears in Palej’s Burlesque as one of the main characters.  The three solos portray diametrically opposed approaches to dance.

One of Schubert’s last compositions, Shepherd on the Rock celebrates the arrival of Spring and the everlasting power of music.
